National Register Historic District Nomination, Togus VA Medical Center and National Cemetery
HHM conducted fieldwork and research and completed a National Register Historic District nomination for the VA Medical Center and National Cemetery in Togus, Maine. The Togus VA Medical Center initially was established as a soldier’s home in 1866 following the Civil War. The campus reflects the evolution of veterans’ care in the United States from the long-term, domiciliary model provided to Civil War veterans to the short-term, rehabilitative model emphasized by the VA following its establishment in 1930, and then the transition of Togus in 1943 to a neuropsychiatric facility. The Togus VA Medical Center and National Cemetery were listed in the National Register as a Historic District rather than an NHL in 2012.
